About the position

We are looking for a line breeder assistant for the agro climatic conditions of the southern part of Europe. As line breeder assistant you are a member of the Soltis Line breeding team, and you are reporting to Soltis country lead.

The position is based in Spain, Marchena (Sevilla).

Scope of the role

As a line breeder assistant you will have two mains roles:

• Line breeder assistant following the elite program for southern part of Europe for the late stages (~60% of your activities);
• Line breeder assistant dedicated to SOLTIS productibility trials, focus on productibility traits in fixed elite lines males and females (~40% of your activities).

Key responsibilities:

• As a line breeder assistant following Elite program for southern part of Europe:

-Management of the late stages generations of the nursery in Spain : planting to harvest, taking notation of the main traits (including productibility traits) depending on the behavior of the plants in your nursery and taking in account selection criteria defined commonly by the Line breeder and the Southern Europe program leader.

-Participation to T1 and T2 meeting for line advancement decisions.

-Be incharge of the development and routine of the drone phenotyping in nursery in Spain in collaboration with the French Phenotyping team.

-Propose all the improvement identified in any step of the breeding program

-All the selection steps have to answer to the strategy and timing defined commonly  by the Southern Europe leader and the Line breeder

-Baptism of the new lines.

-Possibility of traveling to SouthAmerica to collaborate in counter-season works in nursery.

• As a line breeder assistant in charge of the Productibility Trials :

-Management of the productibility trials in Spain, taking notations of productibility traits in the trials.

-Propose innovative and improved phenotyping methods to predict the production of parental lines in real seed production (farmer conditions), in collaboration with the Production team leader and the Line breeder, taking into account the experience of Soltis, or other partners.

-Be incharge of the drone phenotyping routine.

-Big interaction with the other members of the Line Breeding team: spanish and other european colleagues.

-Participate in meetings and congress.

• As a member of the Spanish team, you will have responsibilities related to organization and security, mainly about integration of security in daily work.

Requirements

Knowledge

- Strong communication skills is required for effective collaboration with other teams (Inside Soltis or outside Soltis) nursery operation, breeding support and technology

- Plant breeding and sunflower genetics knowledge

- Agronomy knowledge, including soil and crop management practices (fertilization, irrigation, equipment).

- Solid understanding of new breeding technologies

- English is mandatory

- Master in Agronomy or related field (Msc)
